I don't think the complacency argument really holds up - if you engage online, it means that you are also mentally engaged, and probably willing to take your thought further. I also don't think that there is an argument in the internet being ineffective at worst. Just look at its part in the Arab spring and london riots. It's quite obviously a catalyst for real, physical protest, as well as a sphere for protest in its own right.

Too many people think that they are changing things by updating their facebook status. It's a really teenage attitude that the internet helps people hang on to long past the point that they should. Perhaps the internet has a part to play, and I know it has played a part. But I wonder if it has done more harm than good, by making people complacent.
