Alpo Suhonen coached Finland's ice hockey team at the 1984 Olympic Games and at four World Championships, and became the first European-born NHL head coach in 50 years after joining the Chicago Blackhawks in 2000. He has written extensively on the philosophy of ice hockey, including Kausi sydämestäni – Chicagon päiväkirjat (A Season from My Heart – Chicago Diaries, 2001) and Kirje urheilijalle (Letter to an Athlete, 2002). His recent autobiography, Alpo (2024), is written with Risto Pakarinen and links his coaching philosophy to the phenomenology of sport.
