Barry Smith is Distinguished Julian Park Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Computer Science at the University at Buffalo. He is also Director of the National Center for Ontological Research. As a theoretical and applied ontologist, he is the lead developer of Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), a top-level ontology used in over 600 ontology initiatives across the world, and his work in the field has received over 55,000 citations. He is the co-author of Why Machines Will Never Rule the World (Routledge, 2023).
