Joanna Moncrieff is Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London and a leading figure in the Critical Psychiatry Network. Her books The Myth of the Chemical Cure (2008) and The Bitterest Pills (2013) are central texts in the critical psychiatry movement, which is sceptical of the idea that mental disorders are simply brain diseases and critical of the pharmaceutical industry. Her latest book is Chemically Imbalanced: The Making and Unmaking of the Serotonin Myth (2025).
