Solo Talk: The Ilusion of Dualism
How real is consciousness?
For many consciousness still remains one of the greatest puzzles in philosophy. How the material stuff of the brain is responsible for the immaterial stuff of experience — the smell of a rose or the taste of coffee — has puzzled philosophers and scientists for centuries. And some in response have claimed that reality must consist of two distinct and irreducible elements, mind and matter; a concept commonly known as dualism.
Join distinguished philosopher David Papineau as argues that dualism is a dangerous myth. In particular, it is preventing us from making progress with the increasingly pressing questions of which animals and future intelligent machines are capable of suffering.
