Beyond the sci-fi myths of AI
The real threat lies in the transformation of science itself
Philip Mirowski argues that our understanding of Artificial Intelligence has been hijacked by science-fiction fantasies that distract from the real transformations happening beneath our feet. Drawing on decades of research in the history and political economy of science, Mirowski shows that the rise of AI is inseparable from sweeping shifts in how knowledge is produced, validated, and commercialised. He argues that neoliberal market logics, growing populist distrust of expertise, and the accelerating push to automate every stage of research have converged to create a “Brave New World” in which LLMs emerge not merely as tools, but as the product of much deeper structural shifts in how science is organized. Rather than worrying about sentient machines, Mirowski contends that we must confront this new regime of truth, one that is already reshaping what counts as legitimate knowledge and fundamentally altering what it means to be a scientist. With a case study of AlphaFold as the leading edge of this transformation, his talk offers a gripping, historically grounded vision of our scientific future.
